Short answer
If your sump pump runs non-stop, won't start, or the pit is filling faster than it empties, call (613) 449-1758, 24/7. Most sump pumps last roughly 7 to 10 years. Utilities Kingston recommends a backup pump and a check valve on the discharge line, and its Preventative Plumbing Program may help pay for the work.
Signs your sump pump needs attention
- It runs constantly, even in dry weather
- It doesn't start when the water rises (test it by pouring a bucket of water into the pit)
- Grinding, rattling or humming without pumping
- Rust on the pump or a float that sticks
- It's more than 7 years old
Backup pumps
A standard sump pump stops when the power goes out, and storms knock out power at exactly the wrong moment. A battery backup pump, or a water-powered backup on city water, keeps the pit draining. Utilities Kingston's sump pump guidance recommends one.
Check valves and discharge lines
A check valve stops pumped water from running back into the pit. The discharge line needs to carry water well away from the foundation, and it must not connect to the sanitary sewer. In winter, a frozen discharge line can leave the pump running without moving any water.
